SUMMARY: Protecting the nation’s pork supply

The most devastating disease in the swine industry is a virus called porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, or PRRS. The disease costs the U.S. pork industry an estimated $600 million a year, and overall, more than $10 billion in the last 25 years. Land-grant university scientists are working to prevent losses from this costly disease and help swine producers manage the disease effectively.
